Chapter 11: Glistiron

* * *

Tree took Gherry and flew as fast as his wyvern would allow. Afterward, he and Ha’ti returned for the party’s remaining Pirazhkas, and soon all the spoils of the hunt were back at Skull Harbor. None of the Dragon Pig Pirates were experts in amphibian monsters, so Ha’ti and Tree had left their captures and kills with the researchers who specialized in such creatures, and now Ha’ti flew back to meet the party, still trekking down the beach.

She perched her wyvern on the sand beside them for some well-deserved rest.

“The researchers are currently analyzing the kills and said they can be picked up this evening for carving,” she reported, letting her wyvern pick some nuts from her hand. “As for the captured ones, they said they’ll take care of releasing those back into the wild. So, who’s riding back first?”

She loosed her passenger trapeze and held it out for the first taker.

“Well, it’ll be some hours before the Pirazhkas are ready, and we still need to mine Kaito’s glistiron,” Pix replied. “There’s a decent patch halfway between here and the harbor, so would you mind dropping us off there?”

“Sure thing!” Ha’ti agreed.

Dwayne opted to return to Skull Harbor with Ha’ti, but she returned to help the rest of them toward the glistiron patch. After two more trips, Pix, Jaz, Kaito, Nova, and Sacha had set down in a small clearing close to another wyvernut tree. This tree must have been chosen as a field wyver-aerie specifically because of its proximity to this patch, Kaito reasoned.

He’d expected the task of finding glistiron to be at least nominally challenging, but he’d been able to spot the obvious glitter of the ore from the aerie, and now the party led him to a clearing positively brimming with chunks of grey, glittering metal. They were neither scattered about freely, nor embedded in the ground, but rather sprouting directly up from the earth, as if they were the product not of lengthy geological processes, but little more than seeds dropped to grow on their own. They bloomed in similar patterns, too, if “bloom” was even the right word to use. Their points flared out from their centers like bursts of star-sugar candy.

“So metal just grows here?” Kaito asked, crouching to examine one. “Like plants?”

“Sort of,” Pix said, and rooted through her equipment to produce what looked like a collapsible pickaxe. “There’s a common monster called an Ironspine that sheds its scales as they grow, and there’s just enough magic left in the scales that they keep growing even after they leave the monster’s body. You’ll want something stronger for a high-grade weapon—and there’s a whole class of metallic monsters you can hunt for that—but glistiron’s good for most starter tools.” She put her hand on the hilt of her capacitor blade. “My weapon’s glistiron-based, and it’s held up pretty well.”

Kaito took a closer look at her weapon and had to agree. Given what he knew of Pix, she wasn’t of
